Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Cui Jianchun and several officials from both China and Nigeria, including the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Adesola, attended the ceremony.
Cui Jianchun stated in his speech at the groundbreaking ceremony that this project is a concrete measure to implement the "Nine Projects" of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum, an important part of the China-Nigeria cooperation strategy, and a vivid embodiment of the friendship between the two countries. He believes that with the joint efforts of all parties, this project will surely become a quality project.
Adesola expressed deep gratitude for the long-term assistance provided by China to Nigeria, stating that the solar traffic signal project will greatly alleviate traffic pressure in Abuja, enhance the traffic capacity of Abuja, reduce accident rates, and bring more convenience to the lives of residents in the capital area.
It was introduced that the solar traffic signal project aided by China in Abuja is divided into two phases. The first phase completed the installation of solar traffic signals at 74 intersections, which have been operating well since their handover in September 2015. The two sides signed a cooperation agreement for the second phase of the project in 2021, which will establish solar traffic signals at the remaining 98 intersections in the capital area, achieving unattended operation at all intersections in the capital area.
